Coaching involves working with teams or, more rarely, individuals, to surface and identify the problems they face, and develop and implement strategies for tackling them.

Compared to mentoring, which is very much about knowledge transfer from an outside expert, coaching is a more facilitative role. Coaching is more suited to situations where internal change, negotiation and team personalities are a component of the problem, rather than lack of expert knowledge. A longer period of engagement is usually required for coaching to be effective than for mentoring.
